Oscars Lose Track of the Mainstream

I, for one, am happy with the way the Oscars played out last night. If the awards are all about rewarding the best in cinema, then last night's outcome was spot on (great movies and great acting talent). Box office success (particularly in the U.S.) does not mean that a movie has artistic merit--in fact, I have very little faith in the American public when it comes to movies, since crowds continue to flock to inane blockbusters like "Transformers". Moreover, if "talents" like Jessica Alba (who can't act their way out of a paper bag) are the future of American cinema, then I would rather look to foreign actors and movies for my cinema fix. Daniel Day-Lewis is probably the best actor out there, period, and Tilda Swinton has always done extremely interesting work. My favorite American actors are people like Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman, who are brilliant talents but not tabloid fodder. Somewhere along the way Hollywood unfortunately forgot that cinema is an art form and made it all about commercial success. Thankfully, at the very least the biggest award show in cinema on this side of the pond has yet to be tainted by the likes of Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton.
