It's striking how so many conservatives, like Cal Thomas, are sounding more and more like Jimmy Carter these days.
In 1979, in his famous "malaise" speech, President Carter said this:
"In a nation that was proud of hard work, strong families, close-knit communities and our faith in God, too many of us now tend to worship self-indulgence and consumption. Human identity is no longer defined by what one does but by what one owns."
At the time, conservatives ridiculed Carter as seeming to criticize the American people for the failings of his own Administration. And other voices, like Ronald Reagan, insisted there was nothing wrong with the American people; what was needed was a change of leadership at the top.
In the end, the American people agreed with Reagan, and refused to accept responsibility for what had gone wrong in America. In 1980, they booted Carter and elected Reagan.
And if Cal Thomas and other conservatives continue this line of implying there's something wrong with the American people while refusing to admit how much the Bush Administration screwed up, they face a similar shellacking in November.
