in response to reader comment: poverty of historicism

Submitted by Rihard Barrett, Feb 26, 2008 16:30

'War is hell', most restaurant meals are based on slaughter but that dosen't inhibit cookery articles. We all have to enter who, why and when with some historical charecter. Lawrence was made a fellow of All Souls in order to write the The Seven Pillars of Wisdom, he slept under a blanket on the architectural battlemented roof rather than in his room. That did not cause conflict however a story goes he then started planting mushroom spores on the college lawns for food production which yielded the heavy heal of the mancible (bursar) crushing them. Staying up all night like a thief he refused to sleep and instead carried out his plan to re-enlist as an aircraftman, post traumatic stress sydrome?

What is important is WW1 changed Britain for the better, votes for women, breakdown in the class system but at a huge price both in Arabia and the fields of Flanders any excuse to remind ourselves of what we lost and what we gained is important.
