Harold, I couldn't disagree with you more. I thought his discussion here of committed terrorists versus potential terrorists vs the majority of the Muslim world shows a pretty nuanced understanding of social values theory a la Ronald Inglehart and company. The position that it's not enough to make chummy with the mainstream Muslim universe nor is it enough to "hunt down and kill the enemy" as the hawks like to say, but instead to police and combat the militant/radical wing while making the sort of socio-financial investments in the Muslim world that (sociologically speaking) cripple that wing's influence...this seems to me a very mature and salient view. Moreover, if we can put policies in place that affect a shift towards postmaterial values in the mainstream Muslim world, then mainstream Muslims are likely to take off our shoulders much of the responsibility for policing the anti-Israeli and jihadist contingents. And it's not as if such policies would make for utopian or unreasonable goals.

In general, he sounds a bit wonkier and more worldly here than I'm accustomed to seeing him in debates/stump speeches/soundbites. Very interesting.
