Eighth-Grader Social Promotion Proposal Is Facing Opposition

All of this argument against hw is not at all persuasive. As a product of the nyc school system not so long ago, those hours of hw are to me a rite-of-passage...After all, is there an expectation that hw will decrease as children move into higher grades? I think not. Furthermore, the fact that teachers are abiding by a curriculum bears no impact and has no links to any of the arguments you make. (this is not a factor affecting hw time). Lastly, children are learning in class what they're repeating in hws. This means that hw is reinforcing what they've learned and is simply a review. The multiplications tables are learned by repeatedly rehearsing it, not simply by learning it in class and going home to forget about it and emerge in a world of videogames and internet. Another side-note. The critics of Bloomberg's plan are clearly ignoring the problem. By stating that the money can be funneled into other avenues, they're still not refuting the part where higher standards ought to be higher for entering high-schoolers. If you're going to criticize the mayor or the plan, CRITICIZE the PLAN itself, not digress into some other area.
