The bullpen depth is not as great a concern as it's made out to be. The Mets' recent draft strategy of top tier college relievers should provide cheap and plentiful depth. I believe it's the next market ineffeciency. Hopefully Omar can exploit this to great effect.
Consider that starters throw fewer innings each year. The need for quality pitchers in the bullpen will only increase. This need creates a greater demand in the marketplace for quality bullpen arms. The inflating cost of relievers is compounded by the vagaries of their performance. It's a crapshoot which veteran journeyman will be effective from year to year. The Mets have addressed this issue with their drafts of Kunz, Rustich, Joe Smith, John S Holdzkom. Don't be surprised to see these kids at shea this year.
