in response to reader comment: AMERICA'S COVERT IMPERIALISM

Submitted by Michael Rodriguez, Mar 4, 2008 14:05

Upon reading Patrick Hazrads article I kept looking for substance, concrete unambiguous facts that would stand alone without the distraction of angry commentary disguised as fact.

Here are a few opinions by P.D. Harzard (spelling not corrected):
1)"Mitt Romney sealed his abdication speech with the by now boilerplate assurance that America remains the greatest civilization in the history. This infantile narcissism amuses thoughtful Europans no end".

1) - Ok, so the phrase "America is the greatest" is proof of some delusional expression unheard of in any other country on the planet. I guess by "thoughtful" Europeans you mean the smart ones - ones that agree with you perhaps?

2)"This is me protests too much reflex is a dangerous psychiatric tick"

2)- Patrick, what does this mean.....really?

3)"The embarrassing disparities between our official ideals and our initial Amerind genocide and continuing corruption of black slavery persuaded us to assume this mask of the Greatest Ever"

3)-Yes this is an issue. And I hate to appear like justifying bad behavior by pointing to other bad behavior. I don't know if you're one of the more particularly maligned minorities. But in 1964 I was 10 years old and the civil rights movement was on. You can imagine what it was like for me and others. I would like to think that your strong words are the product of actions that you personally took to help at least 10 people feel as much an American as you did. If not, which mask are you wearing?

4)" the yawning gaps between quotidien realities and our high fallutin' self image means that in a literal sense most Americans are schizophrenic."

4)- of course they're schizophrenic, they have to be. They live a life contrary to your beliefs.

I know I laid the sarcasm on a little bit. My point is you had a point Patrick, but it was laced with emotional rhetoric that I didn't get it. It seems that all you're saying is that America's the evil empire. See - done in one sentence! If you consulted with me I could have saved you all that time writing those four paragraphs.

I do agree morally and based on our laws America is not playing by her on rules. In fact no country on earth has had an existence based on what is moral and just in accordance with that countries law. To (appear) to put America alone on the pedestal of sin is a bit ridicules.

Arthur C. Brooks, Director of the Nonprofit Studies Program at Syracuse University, conducted a study on charitable giving a couple of years ago, and published the following findings.

70 percent of Americans give to charity each year, and do so at far higher levels than people in other developed nations: three times as much as the British, four times as much as the French, and seven times as much as the Germans. Note that these comparisons are a percentage of GDP, showing that Americans don't just give more overall; they give proportionately more, relative to their income, than people in other countries
