A Lyrical Tribute, From One Songwriter to Another

Submitted by Critique, Mar 4, 2008 15:51

I attended the show on Saturday evening, Feb 25, and I must tell you, it was a huge dissappointment to me. I am a big fan of Kander and Ebb, and I had heard about the Lyrics and Lyricists program for many years and this was the first time I attended one of these concerts.

I agree with you that the two singers that performed the songs written for Liza Minnelli did not have the range or the stage presence to pull it off. It felt very flat, and lacked energy. Now, of course, it would not be fair to compare them to Liza, but a good energetic performer could have been more entertaining.

But the biggest dissappointment of all, in my opinion was Tyne Daly. She was the one I looked forward to seeing the most, especially after seeing her star turn in Gypsy a few years ago. She was phenominal as Mama Rose. However, there was no excuse for her not to know the lyrics to the songs!! After all this is a tribute to Fred Ebb, the lyricist! Her performance bordered on amateurish! How can a professional like her not know the songs and need to have the sheet music in front of her, and then lose her place as she's reading it! Someone get her a teleprompter!

The fact is, I have seen better performances in community theatre! I don't think I will attend another concert at the Y, even though I love Broadway musicals, and Broadway composers.
