Sparkling Restoration At the Plaza Hotel

Submitted by Sir Joshua, Mar 6, 2008 08:52

Although the Plaza is located fairly at the edge of New York's Upper East Side, it has always formed a focus for both tourists and natives alike. While I thought the Union financed TV ads aired just prior to it's closing (the more things change, the more they remain the same) rediculous, there was a twinge at the thought of bustling foreigners being the new inhabitants of condos in the seven figures.

I remember having breakfast once with my wife in the Palm Court as Glen Ford, in heavy shades, ate Eggs Benedict across the room. Once a car sales room, the Palm Court has been through many reincarnations. But it is at it's best as a lunch spot. The old cast of waiters, Manny, Eduardo, etc. who if you complimented them on a particular piece of table equipment would, for example, empty out the lunch rolls into a napkin and hand you the bread-basket as a take-home souvenier. It was never a stuffy room, and anyone who brought that attitude there was just performing on their own. It's wonderful to know that it's back and up and running. It will be good to see the other rooms open as well. Truly a part of New York.
