This an insightful article and I enjoyed reading it. But I feel that women making 70cents on the dollar, with black women even less, is not a sign of progress, unfortunately. Further, I shudder at the misogyny of the media evidenced by the horrendous abuse and hurling of sexist epithets toward Hillary Clinton, and even her daughter being 'pimped out'. Mr. Obama was handled with kid gloves by the media and certainly racist comments are now socially and legally unacceptable. (Remember Imus!) There will be lawsuits!
However, being female does not afford you any standardized 'nonacceptable' social and/or legal protection. It is so ingrained in our culture. So when a McCain supporter shouts: "How do we beat the Bitch?" he laughs it off and doesn't protest. When an overzealous televangelist fanatic keeps repeating "Hussein Obama", McCain offers profuse apologies 'denouncing and rejecting' such comments with zeal.
Young women are more conservative. Women, as Steinem wrote, grow more radicilzed with age, whereas men grow more content and conservative as they age. Young women have yet to meet ....domestic abuse, family court hearings, social workers, shelters for abused women, rapes, etc. etc. They're young and think that the world is fine the way it is. Unfortunately, we need women of Mrs. Clinton's strength, resilience and lifelong commitment to children and women's issues if we are to make this a better world. For you must admit, the foundation of a healthy society depends on its treatment of these two stakeholders most of all. And Mr. Obama's promises and rhetoric, however well-meaning, lack the substance that only a woman's experience and commitment to this core consstituency can fully understand and act upon. Even though not successful, she was the pioneer in the early 90s of the Universal Healthcare. She understands this is the most important issue to be tackled. And she risked her reputation on it.
There is nothing in Obama's record to suggest that these issues have ever preoccupied him to the extent where he would give them the fiery all-consuming energy that has distinguished Hillary the past three decades. Yes, it feels good helping make history, but it sure feels better to know you're supporting the candidate whose passions are similar to yours. It's going to take another few generations to be afforded the opportunity to push for a woman of this calibre and competence. And on a more pragmatic note, Obama's anorexic resume would be torn to shreds by McCain if nominated...
