Pope Readies a Challenge to Catholic Educators

Submitted by ten13, Mar 7, 2008 09:34

It's interesting...and encouraging...to hear that the Pope will demand that Catholic schools become "more Catholic."

But will the Vatican also encourage that the Catholic Church in the United States continue to give a "wink and a nod" to the Democrat politicians who advocate abortion? I think they will. Will the Kennedys and that ilk still be allowed to receive the sacraments, or will the hypocritical Church in the U.S. continue to allow these people to be held in high esteem, even from the altar and on the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral?

Also, despite what the Fordham University spokesman says about Fordham's commitment to the Catholic faith: one need only walk around the Bronx campus to realize that Fordham has all but given up on any attempt to advocate the religion that made it the school it once was. With the exception of the campus church itself, and a small bulletin board in the McGinley Center dedicated for the "campus ministry," and the elderly retired priests who occasionally roam the campus, one would have no indication that this was the Fordham University founded by the Jesuit Community over 160 years ago.

As a "lapsed" Bronx Irish Catholic, I am curious when I read about the Church's "declining attendance" at Mass each week and why people of my generation have walked away from the teachings and upbringing that we brought us so far. And maybe some will say that a lapsed Catholic should have no say in these matters. But the Church need only look at themselves for the answers.
