Pope Readies a Challenge to Catholic Educators

Submitted by John House, Mar 7, 2008 10:17

I scratch my head when I see religious institutions like St. Louis University in St. Louis secularize themselves so they can obtain TIF money to build a sports stadium that rivals the Scotttrade Center. More profoundly, I have difficulty when Phyllis Schafley is speaking in a church for the same reasons that Hillary Clinton should not speak there. The religious institution holds a body of thought, and I try to consider religion as an influence, not an endorsement, for all politicians and pundits.

More fundamental, however, is the Catholic Church's long and persisting influence on child abuse. Considering the events of Los Angeles, Boston, Portland,.... and the Catholic Churches very spotty reform, incomplete contrition and outright concealment, it would be entirely appropriate to deny the Pope a visa to enter the United States.

Denying a visa in the midst of this public scandal would encourage everyone to uphold for the public values they profess to hold internally.
