I must take issue with your assertion that the Ukrainian community in the East Village surrendered amicably to Cooper Union's massive glass box. This is simply not the case, as evidenced in the years of fighting this community did against the development. Rather than go into details here, I've written about this in my blog:

A few words ("surrendered to it amicably") may seem insignificant, but in a New York under siege, it is critical we keep in mind that much of the city protests and suffers the super-gentrification process and the big development currently running roughshod over our neighborhoods.

We do not go gently into this goodnight.
