The photo displayed with this article was taken sometime after the Korean War -- an unbelievably brutal war (nearly 1000 deaths/month, 8,000 missing in action, in three years). You can see how his right hand rests on his left -- this is because chest wounds (and also tuberculosis) ultimately neccessitated the removal of on of his lungs. The surgery triggered a stroke that left him paralyzed in his right arm/hand, left leg and unable to speak for the remainder of his life. Approximately a year after the stroke, his wife died of cancer, leaving him a fully disabled single father. He truly suffered above and beyond.
