We've got plenty of Wal-marts here in PA, and you ain't missing nothing. Those places are dumps. People who work at a place that treats them like crap aren't going to take pride in keeping it up, especially when it's so big that some workers don't even know what goes on over at the other side of the store. Not to mention local shops within 10 miles of the place went downhill as soon as it got built. I live outside of Philly and there's not much difference between the Philly one (which is located at an old shipyard across from a strip club) and the suburban ones (usually near a mall with huge parking lots crowded with unretrieved shopping carts). It's cheap for a reason.
