Conrad is an artist who reflects the imperial exploitation of the African in the Belgian Congo. Adam Kirsch has revealed to me somethiing which was incompatible with my own father's sensitive and intellectual nature. He was a ship's captain, far-travelled and well-read yet he often said only Joseph Conrad could write about life at sea. He also seemed to me to perceive black men as noble savages with stereo-typical characteristics. Kirsch has enabled me to see that my dad was greatly influenced by Conrad,s powerful imagery and the prevailing ideology ,as i have been
