The Tragedy of Hypocrisy

Submitted by Robert Irmas, Mar 12, 2008 23:32

The ultimate hypocrisy is the righteous indignation of the American public. We produce and consume more pornography than any other nation in the world. We have created entire cities that cater to the baser of human instincts. We use sex to sell everything from vacations to lawnmowers. We snicker and giggle, oogle and salivate. But when one of us caves in, for a reason best known to the transgressor, we rise up in righteous indignation, cluck our collective tongues, and damn his soul to the 9th circle of hell. We don't know the dynamics of the Governor's marriage. We don't know anything of the devils in his soul that may have led him to these actions. We make excuses for murderers (he had a horrible childhood, he ate too much sugar, listened to hard rock and played too much Nintendo) But we cannot cut a little slack to anybody in the public eye because Americans love a good old fashioned public lynching. Let's understand that in order to be elected to the City Council in a medium sized American city, you have to sell your soul to the devil. I don't want any of these folks as my elected moral compass. I'll get that representation elsewhere. All I ask is that they don't sell their vote, they don't sell their influence, they keep your promises, and stand up for what they believe in. What they do in their own time machs nicht to me.
