'The Wire': War of Truths

Submitted by Paul Leber, Mar 14, 2008 09:38

Although it consistently provided a provocative and disturbing, yet sympathetic, image of black kids growing up in the urban ghettos of contemporary America, the Wire was marred by a gratuitous use of offensive stereotypes for other ethnic groups. One can only wonder what point, in particular, Simon intended when he assigned virtually every corrupt lawyer in the courthouse bribery subplot of the final episode a Jewish surname. There is no doubt that some lawyers are corrupt and that some proportion of lawyers are Jewish, but Simon's script manages to promote the invidious notion that corrupt lawyers are typically Jewish. Shame on him!
