A decent backup catcher will play primarily in games already decided, second game of a day/night twinbill,or when your No.1 goes down. When No 1 is down, you of course have to get another catcher for the depth chart. Not many available usually when that occurs, you then take the best option you have,no really effective way to upgrade. Now at first base,if your defensive man is your starter, and the rest of your lineup is good,or in the Yanks case, very good, you can get away with a good glove man.
