John Batchelor seems to have reread a 100 page book of world history and linked opinions or anecdotes together to prove that the rich are gaining on the poor. At least Marx and Engles laid a theoretical base before offering their answer to an unjust world paraphrasing " to each according to his need and from each according to his ability." Now Mr. Batchelor proclaims that the world has learned nothing as George Santayana predicted because his own obervations have not been accepted as history. But the world has learned that Communism and pure Socialism do not work and these theories of social order have given way to Capitalism. One way to measure the worth of Capitalism from past social orders is to look at life spans throghout the world. More people lead longer, healthier, and productive lives with freedom to pursue happiness than ever before. The economic revolution in China is a spectacular example of social progress since 1937. No Mr. Batchelor, having memories of history and recalling anecdotes to prove your thesis is not what Mr. Santayana had in mind. as a way for society to progress.
