I applaud the stance by Manhattan Mini Storage to publicize, as part of a larger advertising campaign, the effort to ban horse-drawn carriages in New York! This issue, like the others, warrants serious attention, and yet the public seems to be largely unaware of the safety issues within this industry. Horses spook in traffic, and the NYC carriage horses must travel up to 4 miles daily to and from their stables. The constant pounding on pavement takes a grim toll on their overall health. Despite recommendations otherwise, the owners often have the horses working in snowy and icy conditions and sweltering heat. But the worst part is the dangerous traffic conditions in which they weave in and out--amid distracting noise such as sirens, honking horns, and garbage trucks. The very predictable risk of putting horses into city traffic endangers both the horses as well as the public safety, and major metropolitan areas worldwide have banned the use of horse-drawn carriages for the obvious reasons. New York City has the worst traffic and the highest carriage-horse accident rate in the nation. Manhattan Mini Storage is taking a leadership position on an issue that deserves to be reckoned with now. Let's not have to see the sight of another dead horse sprawled on a New York street.
As for Carolyn Daly's pale anemic allegation about a real estate motivation, too funny! She should go and be a shill for pharma! Or convince us that ketchup is a vegetable ... or something. Jeez.
