The Peak Oil theory is absolutely real. The problem is that Kunstler is indeed a crank and is engaged in wish-fulfillment. He predicts modern civilization will end for romantic reasons -- because he doesn't like it. He has no faith in human ingenuity to engineer workarounds and says "there will be no hydrogen economy". Kunstler is a good writer and likes to pontificate about global economics like he had a Ph.D in it, but he's still a cloying, nihilistic theater major with an annoying Manhattan lisp. Maybe his hatred for all things modern is the kind of schadenfreud comes from being a single, artistic loner, who by his own admission, didn't earn more than $15,000 a year until he was 40.
