in response to reader comment: Second Amendment

Submitted by Donald Cole Lost Springs Kansas, Mar 20, 2008 01:07

Gary;

I do appreciate that the right to bear arms is absolute and that the right does belong to citizens as individuals.

I too am a gun owner and I have in my ancestry many patriots of the Revolutionary War.

I am a veteran of the US Army.

I strongly disagree with the registration of weapons, however I do agree that proper training and licensing should be mandatory.

I strongly believe that the founding fathers of this country firmly desired that the people would in the event of necessity be able to throw off an oppressive government.

On the other hand I have been exposed to people who have only selfish concerns and who are considered criminals of society.

I have also been well acquainted with persons of rather low intelligence, other persons who are certifiable as being out of touch with reality as well as numerous other personality types which certainly could not be trusted with a weapon of any kind.

If I had my opportunity to speak before the Supreme Court on this matter, you could bet your bottom dollar that I would argue that private citizens of this country have the right to own whatever type or means of weapon with which they have the means to obtain, however I would caution that certain types of individuals would pose a great risk to society if they had those weapons at their disposal.

I have already suggested to my State Representative that before the Supreme Court issues it's ruling on the matter that he propose a Bill which would specify that certain types of individuals can be denied the right to keep and bear arms.
