Company To Weigh In on Horse-Drawn Carriage Debate

Submitted by Susan, Mar 20, 2008 14:47

The Coalition to ban horse-drawn carriages tells many lies and half-truths on their webpage! First of all it states that the average working life of a NYC carriage horse is 4 years. What they don't tell you is that many of these horses had much harder previous work lives (such as working 14 plus hours a day every single day for the amish), and being a carriage horse in the city provides a loving semi-retirement, as these horses are able to pull much more than what is required of them in the city. The police horses may have a longer city life, but they are much younger when they arrive in the city. Both sets of horses retire from the city around the same age, the carriage horses are just older than the police horses when they arrive in the city.

Additionally they lie about horse slaughter. Currently it is illegal to slaughter horses anywhere in the US and all US slaughterhouses are shut down! With the price of meat as low as it is, it is not economical and takes too much time to haul horses to Canada or Mexico so this is not a valid option either!

Their website is nothing but a bunch of lies! Do not support the ban on carriage horses, educate yourself with non-biased information and support the enforcement of laws that are already in place to care for carriage horses as they are now!
