Paterson Warns Against Tax Hike

Submitted by George N. Spitz, Mar 20, 2008 15:09

Governor Paterson is correct in refusing to raise any sort of taxes even against the wealthy who probably could afford to pay more. Fairness is not the point. Raising taxes to balance The New York State Budget merely postpones substantial savings mounting into billions that can be realized by a gradual elimination of useless government entities, such as Borough Presidents, overlapping Town, Village and County Supervisors, School Boards and the

multitudinous so-called Special Districts. Also, much contracting out work is either unnecessary or capable of being done by the present work force at much lower cost. and finally reforming a pension system with costs mushrooming tenfold since Alan Hevesi was first elected Comptroller. These are the issues to be raised before any discussion of increasing taxes and fees that would further harm the economy.
