Fr. Neuhaus is an extraordinarily intelligent critic who exemplifies the qualities he attacks in Professor Nussbaum. Any long time reader of FIRST THINGS recognizes how he and his editorial staff have used Roman Catholic ideas to justify the neo-conservative agenda. If it had not lead to such immense suffering, their "theological" justification of the invasion of Iraq would have been---I shall be derivative--risible. Nussbaum's thesis, therefore, would be anathema and that leaks into his review. It is a testament to Nussbaum's strong work that he could not safely dismiss it, as is his custom with those books that threaten his narrow and un-catholic world view.
