Of course, Pagden is very simplistic. Nor do I see any reason to compare the relatively benign Persian Empire --which Kirsch points to as well-- with Islam which destroyed the ancient civilizations of the Orient in its early centuries.
Nor was ancient Greece as original as many believe. There was a great deal of influence from the Orient, what is now called the Middle East, on ancient Greek culture. Herodotus points out that the first philosopher of ancient Greece, Thales, was a Phoenician. Aristotle points out the primacy of Egypt in the development of mathematics. There's a number of obvious parallels between some ancient Greek stories and stories in the Bible. Consider Pandora's box letting troubles into the world as compared with Eve's eating the forbiddent apple and subsequent departure from the Garden of Eden. Then think about Deucalion's flood and Noah's, and Iphigenia compared with Jephtha's daughter. Accounts of the lives and sayings and beliefs of the early philosophers, Thales and Pythagoras indicate many parallels to Jewish beliefs and practices.
