Madness Awaits the Boy Who Makes Scents

The problem I had with this film is that the object of infatuation, the scent, is something the viewer has to imagine. As we are rushed through the film, we do not have the opportunity to become infatuated, more likely enslaved to the aromas that drive the protagonist wild. Unlike a film about a young artist who sees the Sistine Ceiling for the first time, or Pontormo's Deposition in isolated majesty, we can share none of the emotion that I would think is necessary to drive us to the hero's ends. Besides, every era has it's gutter, with a title like 'Perfume' I would hope for a little more silk and flounce. Afterall, the last thing on a grovelling peasants mind is how much pleasure his nose can give him.
