Your editorial is lacking in common sense. Even if a Wal-Mart opened in the city, it would likely be in a remote industrial location that could handle a big box store. But most seniors don't have cars or don't have valid driver's licenses to get to these locations. Even if they could reach the location by bus or subway, the seniors wouldn't be able to take advantage of the low prices as they can't shlep their bulk purchases on public transit.
Those of us in the city who still drive will take our cars (or rent a car) and go to the suburbs or New Jersey once in awhile to stock up on these items and save money. Thus it has been, and thus it will always be.
Wal-mart will create massive traffic in a residential neighborhood and destroy small businesses there.
