Voigt's Isolde Falls Flat

Submitted by Robert Moran, Mar 24, 2008 17:09

Having known TRISTAN all my life from attending as a student Nilsson's first Isolde in Vienna and Bayreuth to her last ones in Munich....having seen Tristan in all the major houses....I was curious (having the Vienna/Voigt Tristan recording) to see/hear what might be going on. As I had not heard about the past stage disasters of the few weeks, I turned on the radio to immediately notes Debbie going flat on more than one note...I emailed another Wagner nut-case and sent "Are my ears going out or is she really out of tune?" Answer: "Your ears are fine. She's flat. My radio is now off". I had a tape machine going....just for kicks and listened to that final Liebestod...and YES, even her final note is flat.....WHAT is going on here? I do have friends in the MET Orchestra and yes, they are less than amused. Yes, I remember this stupid "new" German production some years ago...that German-look of about early 1970s and found it dated even then....but now, it is totally passe. So much for the MET.....
