Defense Secretary Is Wary of Adding More Iraq Troops

Submitted by Robert, Dec 28, 2006 13:30

Many, civilians and military alike, have been saying from the begiining that more troops were needed for the mission in Iraq, especially for the occupation. But Bush listened to Rumsfeld's argument for a leaner operation and the U.S. military went into Iraq with what has turned out to be too small a force. Furthermore, as I understand it, military brass have requested more forces and more eqipment but the Bush administration has refused, instead spending vast sums of money on private contractors, all the while claiming that they were only doing what the military command in Iraq was suggesting.
Now that the Joint Chiefs of staff and the top generals in Iraq say that there is no point in an escalation, Bush wants to send in more troops.
Worst of all, whether there is a troop surge or not, there still doesn't seem to be any sort of viable, encompassing plan for achieving any sort of stabilty in Iraq. And Mr. Bush still refuses to explore diplomatic options in the region that, while most distasteful, are certainly necessary.
I see no reason to hope for any kind of competence from this administration any more.
