You have hit the nail squarely on the head. Your article on Randolph is free from error. Your detailing his lack of stratagem and guile exposes his lack of qualifications as a manager. It is plane to see that the players have tuned him out. They respect him as a man but have no fervor for his process of deciding in game decisions. The only thing you left out of your article is probably the main reason the players have become indifferent to him. No matter how blatant a bad call goes against the Mets he rarely leaves the dugout to defend his players. In September of last year when the pennant was on the line there were three occasions when the calls went against the Mets and two of the players were suspended for arguing intensely with the umpires. No where was Willie around protecting their backs. The internal discordance between the players for their manager is in my opinion irrevocable. As long as he remains the Mets will under perform. Dusty Baker is not the best at the art of devising and employing strategy, but his generalship is unquestioned and the players would go through a brick wall for him because he always has their back.
