I watched the Kentucky Derby on tv as I do every year. When I saw Eight Belles being walked around the oval, I just thought she was the most beautiful horse! But I noticed how slender her ankles were and that she was a big horse, seventeen hands high. When the horses came out of the gate and they all looked as if they were in one big clump, I wondered if maybe one of the horses somehow accidentally kicked her in the shins. That could have started a fracture that only got worse as she continued the race and then, finally, her ankle bones snapped and she collapsed. I love animals and to hear that she had been euthanized just about broke my heart. Maybe God wanted her for His Heavenly Stables where she can run about without fear of injury. God bless you, Eight Belles! And God bless her owner(s).
