What does this article achieve? Sure it is a commentary but it is simply a rant without substance. In the author's simplistic, the current performance of the Mets is due to one single and over-riding factor: the manager Willie Randolph. The game of baseball involves multiple players and coaches. The outcome of a game involves not only the decisions made by the managers but also the performance of the players. Therefore to reduce the analysis to a single individual is problematic. However, that is not the problem that I have with the commentary/rant. The problem is that you learn nothing from reading the article. I learn nothing about Willie's approach/strategies that is harming the Mets performance. Such objective discussion allows to learn more about the game and how the game should be play. True, the author is not expected to be a baseball guru. However, as a critic, he should be subject to some minimal knowledge about the game. Maybe I miss something, but his whole article is about how dismal Willie is as a manager of the Mets.
Maybe I am expecting too high a standard. But I find it rather distressing where an article lacks a minimum dose of objective analysis. It is simply a mean spirited rant that coincides with the Mets less than stellar current performance. On reflection, one could argue that my opinion also represents a rant on the author's writing. Maybe the important lesson is that it is easier to level subjective criticisms about an individual rather to objectively evaluate a person's work. On this count, I plead guilty as well.
