Call for Olympics Boycott Divides Jewish Groups

Submitted by Isaac Rosenthal, May 13, 2008 01:42

The Chinese people are deeply proud of the Olympics this summer. Any suggestion of a boycott will seriously damage Jewish-Chinese relationships. Boycotting the Olympics will not send the right message to the Chinese government. The Chinese people have been waiting for the Olympics for years and they do not understand the idea of a boycott. My Chinese colleague thought that the boycott was related to communism or somehow the Chinese people and not whats happening in Darfur and Tibet. To the Chinese, Darfur and Tibet is something the government does -- it's a way of life. The Olympics however, are much much more important than you can believe to the Chinese people. Everyone and everything in China is waiting for the Olympics. Believe me, I know, I live in Shanghai.
