I suspect that many among us who claim to be against imposing the death penalty are not absolute in their belief. They just have a higher threshhold for determining when the death penalty is appropriate. In order to be a member of the European Union, a country must forswear the death penalty. It sickens me that such an ignominious person as Saddam Hussein would be granted immunity from death had he been tried within that jurisdiction.
