From Theatrics to Reality

I have been reading Mr. McWhorter's book and I agree with him. I have worked in a college English Dept. with a lot of white people who think they are doing blacks a favor by pitying them or making excuses for students who don't do well. I even had a professor tell me he relaxes his deadlines to benefit the black students. I told him he was crippling them for life. I went back to college as a married mother of three, graduated summa cum laude and am working on my doctorate. I can meet any bar, any time, and that's what I teach my children. I always tell my co-workers the same thing. They need to spend ten minutes with the people in my family and church to get a different view of black culture. Most black people are hard working, value education, and try to be responsible. Yes, we have a few knuckleheads and I decline any explanations of Flava Flav, but as a people, we overcome by overcoming! There is no substitute for hard work and perseverance, and most people know that. Keep beating that drum, Mr. McWhorter, I hear you, loud and clear.
