I appreciate Elliott Gould more now in his later years than I did even back in the 70s and the 80s. Maybe he doesn't do the improv thing as much, (or maybe he does!) but I think his craft is finer honed as an actor and I don't know if he could have done the character actors as well back then as he can now.
