What This Deal Means From a Yankee Perspective

I wholeheartedly agree with Phil above. The Sox traded Garciaparra because he was very injury prone and then was disgruntled. They traded Manny because he wasn't hitting 45 homers and 165 RBIs anymore; yet his off-field behavior (or whatever they call 'Manny being Manny") was increasing. Derek Jeter on the other hand has always been a stable club house leader; although he has been injured from time to time, in no way could you describe him as injury prone like Nomar. Jeter's stats have been declining a little — but he's still above average for a shortstop. Nomar and Manny were begging to be traded; Jeter has been nothing but a loyal Yankee. It is unfair to characterize Cashman as not "consider[ing] everything"; Boston was forced by their own players to imagine the unimaginable when they dealt Nomar and now, Manny.
