The gay rights movement must use the 'separation of church and state' and the First Amendment in their crusade for gay rights (which I support). In arguments against gay marriage, The Alliance Defense Fund says that marriage is traditionally defined as a union between a man and a woman. Which tradition says this? The Christian tradition. So, a religious tradition is dictating the laws of the states to define rights of individuals based on religious preference. That is unlawful based upon the First Amendment, as well as the tradition of 'separation of church and state', deciding who may or may not marry because of their religious beliefs.
In this country, when someone is not allowed to do something because of their race or their religion, banners of the masses against injustice and prejudice are raised in defense. Why are gays not allowed to do the same thing and achieve the same goals? There are too many other issues we face as a nation in crisis (economy, war, environment) that have far broader reaching consequences that are ignored in the face of this very private and quiet matter that should only be between two people who love each other.
