It is bringing about precisely the end that Iran wants, which is the US out of Iraq, leaving it open for Iran to control. Iran's major interest right now is chaos and destruction and bloodshed, because it makes the pant-wetting Democrats and media scream "quagmire" and "hopeless" and generally indulge their self-hating defeatism and apparently limitless lust for waving the white flag of their own perceived moral superiority. Meanwhile, wimpy chicken Bush (were he only a tenth the vicious Hitler clone the Left paints him as) won't unleash the Dogs of War the way they need to be released, meaning we get exactly the hopeless quagmire predicted by the surrender crowd. A few well placed "get out of Iraq or you're next" missles into the power centers of Syria and Iran three years back would have ended this thing a long time ago. Such a tactic would still do much to end it now, though it would take a lot more now for the tyrants in the region to believe we're not the paper tigers Clinton showed us to be, and Bush -- for a brief shining moment -- showed us not to be. Following which he promptly fell into line and buckled at the knees when the NY Times et al got out their whips.

Of course, the guys on the ground are ready and able to end this thing in a heartbeat. The egregious and disgraceful cowardice of our political and pundit classes, however, leaves them playing the role of canon fodder. The good news is that eventually we will do exactly what we need to do. The bad news is that New York or Chicago or LA won't be there any more when we finally get around to it.
