The UN is impotent in this situation, and condeming Russia is inconsequential. If this proves anything, it is that hard diplomacy is what it is going to take to deal with nations like Russia. Bush tried to befriend Putin and hoped that being nice to Moscow would encourage them to act responsibly.

What's so ironic is that It's the same idea Barack Obama has towards foreign policy: a personal and soft touch to diplomacy. John McCain once again proved his mettle. He called Putin out a long time ago as a thug and as far back as '99 pointed to their targeted efforts to repress Georgia. By Obama's initial response it seems as though he didn't know what side we are on, and had to Google Georgia to see who they were. As time rolls on it becomes clearer and clearer who is really ready to lead
