First Black President Will Be a Republican

Submitted by Tomas, Aug 13, 2008 10:34

The author of this article's argument suffers from a number of logical flaws. First and foremost, the author makes the unspoken assumption that the tendency of black New Yorkers' to vote along the Democratic ticket is misguided. She does not, however, provide any reasoning whatsoever as to why this is the case. Effectively, Ms. Colon establishes only that she is a Republican and for that reason believes that the partisan tendencies of black New Yorkers are silly.

Additionally, she provides no policy analysis whatsoever in support of electing a Republican candidate. The decisions of blacks in other regions of the United States to vote along the Republican ticket have no bearing on the decisions of black voters in New York. The elections she cites are local elections which naturally involve very different issues than those that would be found in a Congressional election in Florida, for example. Perhaps she might consider that it is in the interest of urban blacks in New York to vote for Democratic candidates who, following the Party trend, might be more likely to provide and support necessary social services.

Anyone should feel free to disagree with this analysis of the Democratic party (I am admittedly a Democrat), but Ms. Colon succeeds only in denigrating the black voting population in New York and suggesting that their voting decisions are misguided. Ms. Colon should also note that she undermines her own argument in the second-to-last paragraph of this article in which she cites the examples of Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice as evidence that Black Republicans are more likely to be elected for a position such as President. Mr. Powell and Ms. Rice are not elected officials, however! They were both appointments made by President Bush. They are to be admired for the success they have attained, but their positions mean nothing in regards to the electability of a black Republican.

If anything, the success that Barack Obama appears to have achieved thus far in his campaign for the Presidency is evidence that Black Democrats, and not Republicans, may well be the most electable figures.
