Going Gonzo With Ralph Steadman

I enjoyed this article very much, with one exception. I object to the statement "Thanks in large part to his partnership with Thompson, the 72-year-old artist is regarded as an icon of animation in his own right". I agree that Mr. Steadman's renown is partly due to his association with Mr. Thompson ... but, I do not agree that it was "in large part."

I believe, without a doubt, that Mr. Steadman would have had the success and fame that he now enjoys, with or without his collaborations with Mr. Thompson. It is much like the union of Lennon & McCartney. They were an amazing force together, but does anyone doubt that they would have had success individually? And, can anyone say who was more instrumental (pardon the pun) in the team's success? I believe that Mr. Steadman's relationship with Mr. Thompson, and the contributions of his dynamic illustrations, were "in large part" responsible for Mr. Thompson's iconic status today. When I think of a Hunter S. Thompson/Ralph Steadman book, it's the illustrations that first come to mind. Mr. Steadman should be viewed as an equal partner of Mr. Thompson ... and nothing less!
