2009 Yankees May Look A Lot Like 2008 Yankees

I have to disagree with this article. While I don't believe that the Yankees will end up with Texiera, I believe it has more to do with the Yankees getting burned giving long term, 9 figure deals to free agents rather than cost concerns. Using the payroll to justify these points just is not logical. The Yankees had a $207 million payroll this year and a $217 million payroll last year. With a substantial windfall coming from the opening of the new Yankee Stadium (and the higher ticket prices and more luxury boxes that come with it), I don't think crossing the $200 million threshold will keep Hank (and more importantly Hal, the real power in the organization) from spending on top free agents like Sabathia and Sheet along with plugging the holes in the lineup.

Not to mention who's to say the Yankees don't use the young arms like Kennedy or Horne to acquire young, cheap talent to fill such spots? (may I remind you of the Garza-Young deal or the Volquez-Hamilton deal?) While I agree the Yankees of 2009 could very well look very similar to these Yankees (I have a sneaking suspicion that Mussina, Abreu, Marte, and Pettitte will be back), money will not be the motivation. Don't forget how last year Posada was never gonna get 4 years....then did and Rivera wasn't going to get 15 a year for 3 years...then did. If the new era Yankees have shown anything it's that when they really do want someone, the check book can always open wide enough.
