Tae Kwon Do May Steal Some of Beijing Spotlight

As the parent of a teenager who competes at the national level in TKD I would like to correct the author of this article. You are correct that punches are not allowed to the head. There is full contact to the head and face through kicks. Knock out are allowed and injuries happen at these events. I have seen numerous people break bones in competition and get knocked out. In order for a punch to count as a point the opponent must be punched hard enough to move them. A kick that scores is one of force. A light kick never scores. I have taken TKD myself and helped my son by holding various pads for him to kick. Just holding the pads when these athletes kicks them can knock the wind out of you. Please know that this sport is full contact and injuries occur frequently.
