The fact that he never mentioned it in the 25 years including his detailed book account, but suddenly remembers it prior to running for election (though he claims it is his strongest memory) and the fact that he researched a detailed article on Solzhenitsyn looks very bad for McCain. He also says it was the same guard throughout his stay who drew the cross, but he was moved to another location and it is doubtful this guard would also be at the next prison. Let's face it. He knows he can safely lie about this and no one can refute him. But his lack of mentioning it in the 25 years following Vietnam shows it likely did not happen and his story being identical to Solzhenitsyn's written story who he researched certainly lends credibility to his story being a complete fabrication for the sake of votes. That being said, if that's the one thing he gets to use, then I'll let him have it. He has so much going against him otherwise, he can use every gimmick he can get. The horrible way he left his first wife trumps any cross-in-the-sand story he can fabricate.
