"Why is that relevant?" It's relevant because if these immigrants can't afford to take care of themselves without government assistance, they can't afford to buy houses (without the benefit of the no-money-down, subprime mortgages that fueled the real estate bubble and bust). Therefore, importing more poor, unskilled immigrants won't help the real estate market recover.
