John Stewart recently gave a speech at some sort of big convention for news media. One of the things he said is that the now ever-present 24-hour news cycle contributes to a state of constant anxiety and fear, made even worse by the fact that the media outlets have to engage in sensationalism to get ratings. I say we don't shield our children from all of the potential hazards of living portrayed as imminent dangers, but we should shield them from those who peddle the fear.
