As Obama explained last night, he is staging the outdoor event because he believes in government from the bottom up, not the top down and he wanted to give everyone possible a front row seat, which he couldn't do indoors. This style is reflected in his campaign, which raises most of its enormous money from ordinary folks instead of special interests (though certainly not all; let's be real here). In addition, there will be hundreds of Convention watch parties tonight in the metropolitan area alone, just to watch Obama accept the nomination. This goes back to his days as a grass roots organizer and his sincere desire to include as many regular people as possible in his vision of change for America. This approach hasn't been tried since the days of ancient Greece, and not even then on anything like this scale; maybe it won't work, but it's worth the effort to include those who have been unincluded too long. Starting Labor Day, the Obama campaign promises to begin an unprecedented enrollment effort to sign up as many new voters as possible. Certainly we are way past time when only 50% of the eligible electorate should choose the next President. That, in fact, is simply elitist. Many things could turn this election, but the simple fact is, if Obama gets more people to vote than have voted in the recent past, he will win.
